As recent as May 8 2025, la Colección de las Artes y Música from University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus made their 2nd annual Free Comic Book Day event, but this time we wanted to had a more Puerto Rican flavor to the event, so we made a comic compilation with 14 local artists and called the publication La Gallinera (chicken coop). The brief talk would be about how the library staff made this publication and event possible (with a very tight budget). Emphasizing in collaboration with local organizations that supported the project and event.</dc:description>

          <dc:description>The recent publication of books such as Doing Black Digital Humanities with Radical Intentionality by Steele et al. signals a growing concern with teaching DH in thoughtful, student-empowering ways. One easily-overlooked element of pedagogical design is the rhetoric used in syllabi. My research addresses this gap by taking a deep dive into a corpus of DH syllabi: Specifically, I examine their structure and components, as well as sentence-level rhetorical choices to determine how "student-oriented" versus "instructor-oriented" or "content-oriented" these documents are. I unpack how students are discursively constructed in these texts through the nouns and verbs associated with them and discuss the bearing these constructions may have on their perceptions of their own abilities and agency. My corpus contains two sets of syllabi: three from generic "Intro to DH" courses and three from race-focused or Black DH courses. Across all six syllabi, I found examples of the myriad ways that Black DH pedagogies can be enacted (or not) through seemingly simple, even sentence-level decisions. My talk concludes with practical tips and considerations for instructors to implement in their own syllabi. After all, the way we compose our syllabi offers a unique opportunity to begin empowering students before they even set foot in the classroom.

          <dc:description>This presentation examined the deaths of recruits to the army in 1915 at the Liverpool Infantry Camp Field Hospital, the public outcry and the subsequent Royal Commission about the abysmal conditions at the Liverpool Field Hospital.  The deaths sent a shock across the country. 
These conditions were first recognised by volunteers from the newly formed Red Cross, which assisted where possible. The military authorities were ill-prepared for war and overwhelmed by the conditions at the Liverpool Military Camp and the conflict's early months. 
 The local Member of Parliament raised the issue in the Federal Parliament, and a Royal Commission was established on the conditions at the camp. 
This story also examines the groundbreaking role of the Red Cross in Australia following its formation in 1914 and its interaction with military authorities in Australia during the early months of the war.</dc:description>

          <dc:description>This presentation will examine Red Cross work at the Liverpool Field Hospital, where the military was overwhelmed in the early months of the war. At its inception in 1914, the Red Cross's priority in Australia was the care of sick and wounded soldiers under the inspired leadership of Lady Helen Munro Ferguson.  At the Liverpool Camp, the Red Cross stepped in to assist at the field hospital. Questions were asked in Federal Parliament about the atrocious camp conditions, and the Rich Royal Commission was set up in mid-1915. While the Red Cross did not escape criticism, conditions at the camp gradually improved by the end of 1915. Much of the Red Cross's work was groundbreaking and received little recognition at the time or since.</dc:description>

          <dc:description>This presentation examines the challenges of integrating historical trade data on the British East India Company (EIC) and how visualization can aid historical inquiry. I use datasets from the works of K. N. Chaudhuri and H. V. Bowen which covers the EIC trade from 1660 to 1834. I highlight how the choices made in cleaning and merging can shape the final visualization.

The talk will outline key decisions made in data integration, including how to deal with missing or fragmented records. I visualise the merged data using Tableau. The mapping of the trade flows reveals patterns and prompts new research questions. The project is open-access, with all data available via GitHub for further collaboration.

This presentation aligns with the symposium's themes of public engagement and digital methods in humanities research, showing how historical datasets can serve as a foundation for deeper inquiry. Instead of a singular narrative, my project provides a visualisation that allows historians to study EIC trade networks for their own questions.</dc:description>
